If I Don’t Have You

After two songs touting what I’ve Got followed by an If Ever I Would Leave You, a song shouting “ I have nothing if I don’t have you” seems appropriate. For indeed what shall it profit a man or woman to gain the whole world if in the process they lose their soul or the love of their life? That is a rhetorical question of course, the answer being self evident.

The first time I heard the incomparable Whitney Houston sing today’s song it touched my heart for I have felt such love, a love and a longing so deep for someone that nothing and no ones else could ever satisfy. This kind of heart-felt emotion is what inspired the poet to write “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” This is the love for which one would indeed trade the whole world and without which one would feel completely impoverished though surrounded by abundance.

Alas, I cannot sing it like Whitney, but I can sing in with my whole heart for I have loved like that too. The chorus to the Audition Song from La La Land sung by Emma Stone comes to mind:

Great love like great sex is messy. There you have it, the encouraging word for today – make a mess and do it on purpose.
