If Ever I would Leave You

Every bride and groom hopes that they have found that one special person that they can spend the rest of their life with, trusting that no matter what they will never be alone anymore.

When I was a young man and had already tragically learned, the hard way, that most marriages do not last, I found the words in a Cornelius Brothers song to be quite haunting:

For years I misunderstood something that my mother said shortly after she met the woman who would become my fourth and final wife almost thirty five years ago. It was about the time this picture was made at the Alamo in Austin,Texas on a visit there with my mom and dad, my almost nine year old daughter Emily, and my girlfriend Linda Lee. In a few moments away from the others, Mom took me aside and said, “David, this woman is never gonna let you get away.”

I thought it was a dire warning, but it was the observation of a loving mother that saw something special in a woman that she recognized immediately. She had finally met a woman who loved me the way everyone wants to be loved, worshipfully, totally, and completely. Some years later I saw a painting called The Rapture of Psyche that, I think, captures the kind of passion that keeps its promise to never ever leave you nor let you go. Thank you, Linda, for loving me so and never letting me go.
