Hello Mary Lou

Today I share another Ricky Nelson hit song from my youth and his. In his last big hit, Garden Party, that I shared previously Rick sings, “I said good-bye to “Mary Lou” she belongs to me, but when I sang a song about a honky tonk it was time to leave.”

Many of Rick’s older fans had trouble when he tried to reinvent himself as a country singer. Rick died in 1985 at forty-five years old with six others when their small plane crashed in Texas while he and his Stone Canyon Band were touring. Had they lived perhaps their new sound might have eclipsed Rick’s earlier success as a rocker. It is hard to say.

I think none of us wants to be pigeon-holed or put in a box, but want to show ourselves to be multi-dimensional beings. I happen to believe that one life, short or long, is not enough to do that so I look forward to the next adventure even though I am at seventy-three not quite done with this one yet.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
