He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother

Murderous Cain in attempting to deny responsibility for his brother Abel’s death asked God the question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God did not answer that question for the answer is self-evident. We have an obligation to all those we love especially brothers and sisters to protect them and to care for them the best way we can.

I am told the idea for today’s song came from an incident during the Korean War when American troops came upon a boy carrying his wounded brother and ask him if the could help him carry the boy who was very near his own size. They said to him, “He must be heavy.” The boy replied, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”

The road as the song says truly is long with many a winding turn that leads us to who knows where, but we will indeed get there if we share our heavy load and theirs. That’s what friends, brothers and sisters, are for.

Your friend, brother, and fellow traveler,
