For The Good Times
There are so many sad good-bye songs and today’s is one of my favorites. I confess it takes quite a bit of practice to learn to say good-by so graciously and I was a slow learner. The line, “I’ll get along, you’ll find another” is an especially tough one as is the repeated phrase in the refrain, “Make believe you love me one more time for the good times.”
Most romantic relationships like items from the grocery store have a “use by” or “best by” date clearly marked on the packaging. Oh, you can sometimes use them after that date, but buyer beware.” They never taste quite the same. Learning how and when to “let go” is not just a food lesson, but also a life lesson, a love lesson, most of us take our not so sweet time learning.
Another of my favorite good-bye love song is Josh Groban’s Broken Vow. He sings the words so well and with such feeling:

It is the memory of “the good times” that we get to keep somehow. My mom and dad were married a few days before Valentines in 1950 and were together forty-seven years till my daddy passed in 1997. The three additional years mom lived without him were not easy for her. She was angry at dad for leaving her, but then she seemed to be always angry at him. Sometimes I don’t think we realize or truly appreciate the good things, the good people, and the good times in our lives until they are gone.
