Endless Love

The sad fact about most love stories is that they end not tragically and dramatically like the double suicide in Romeo and Juliet, but with one lover being left behind to mourn the loss of the departed one. Few get to leave together on the “buddy plan” like the Hollywood ending to Nicolas Sparks famous book made into a movie, The Notebook. In the book the ending has Noah after having brought Allie back to him one last time by reading their love story to her saying goodbye to her one last time.

The saying goes “only the good die young” still many of us, not so good, if we live long enough will have to say goodbye to everyone we ever loved eventually, losing some slowly, a little a time, and others more abruptly. It is my request to be allowed to make a speedy departure myself, as painlessly as possible and leaving behind as few loose ends and as little mess as I can for someone else to have to clean up after me.

My mother lived most of her adult life with chronic depression, especially evident during the last three years of her life after my father, her partner in crime for forty-seven years, died. The real crime of their relationship was their inability to live together peacefully. A line from the book and movie Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy reminds me so much of my parents love story. He writes, “I don’t know when my parents began their war against each other – but I do know the only prisoners they took were their children.”

I like to believe that we get to have do overs, if not in this life in the lives yet to come, where we can play out this endless love story till we get it right.

Today’s song says, “Oh, love I’d be that fool for you… my love, my love, my endless love.” Or as Rick says to Llsa in the end of the classic 1942 black and white movie Casablanca, “Here’s looking at you, Kid.”
