Don’t

“Don’t say don’t” is today’s Elvis song and it causes me to think of how mommies and daddies hope baby’s first word will be mama or dada when it is more likely to be “No” for it is the word they hear most often. No, do not, and don’t are drummed into us from an early age.

Some years ago funny man, Jim Carey, made a movie called, Yes Man, about a man who takes a pledge to say yes to everything. He had experienced a very stunted and little life as a “No man” and saying yes to everything really opened up his life. Though it presented some comical and difficult situations and revealed that there are times we have to say no, it was eye-opening how many opportunities one misses by saying no without thinking.

I used to joke that when my mom said “maybe” she always meant “no.” Maybe should mean maybe I am considering it. Consider this, say yes to one new thing each day and watch your life change for the better. Some people try to do one good deed a day for others, do one good deed a day for yourself, say, “Yes.”

Baby, don’t say don’t.
