Don’t Be Cruel

Today’s song is another fast paced early Elvis song. “Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true. Why should we be apart? I really love you, Baby, cross my heart.” Are the three sentences that tell the theme of the song and the hopeful sentiment of lovers young and old.

It is no kindness to string someone along with the false promise of a relationship that will never be. Ashley Wilkes in the book and movie Gone With The Wind comes to mind. Scarlett wasted a big part of her life mooning over Ashley because he was “too kind” to tell her plainly that his heart belonged to Melanie.

Just because we are attracted to someone does not mean they are attracted to us. It is one of the hardest of life lessons to learn and sadly some never do. Reciprocal relationships can be wonderful and so we hope our love will be returned in equal measure. When it is not we are hurt and disappointed, but that’s life. Those last two words are the punch line to an old joke:

“What is life?

It’s a magazine.

How much does it cost?

Five bucks.

That’s too much.

That’s life.”

Life and love cost us each of us all we have to give so keep that in mind and be kind.
