The appeal of bad boys (and bad girls for that matter) is undeniably. I am reminded of a line that I heard and even used a few times myself as a young man. It goes something like this, “Your such a good girl, trouble is there is just no demand for good girls.” Why even Jesus spoke of leaving the ninety and nine well-behaved sheep unattended to go in search of the one that had gone astray.

There is just something that draws us to those who wander. To quote another famous line, “All who wander are not lost.” Indeed most bad boys and bad girls are only acting out to get attention. Bad girls often have “daddy issues” and bad boys “mommy issues” because for whatever reason that did not get enough or perhaps the wrong kind of attention from the one they craved the most attention from as a child.

Jesus once told a crowd of “church folks” that thought they were so good, that surely they would be on the first bus to heaven, that the bad girls and boys, the harlots and the tax collectors, would enter the kingdom of heaven ahead of them.

Another line I love to use is, “Jesus loved bad girls (here used as a euphemism for the more familiar term for bad girls) and so do I.”

Why are women drawn to “bad boys” and men to “bad girls?” Because we understand consciously or unconsciously that they are acting out to get our attention. We are problem solvers and problem children we believe deserve the most and closest attention. Bad, bad boys (and bad, bad girls) make us feel so good as Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine sang so well in their 1985 hit song “Bad Boy.”

Your friend and fellow traveler, bad boy,
