Daughters

I am a poet, so as much as I love a beautiful melody and instrumental accompaniment it is the lines and lyrics that I find most meaningful about movies and songs. The lyrics to today’s song say so well how important it is that fathers love their daughters and mothers too. As the song says, “Daughters will love like you do.”

The true measure of a man is not how much money he acquires nor how much power he wields, but if he has children, how good a job he does being a father. The story goes that there is only one perfect or heavenly father. Whether you believe we were created or evolved, it is evident that we are, at our very best, far from perfect.

There is a line in the New Testament that says, “Be you therefore perfect even as your father in heaven.” Children learn by mimicking or copying their parents. My dad loved cliches. One of his favorites was, “Do as I say not as I do.” I always thought it, but only as a young adult had the courage to say it to him, “Dad, what you do speaks so loudly that I can hardly hear what you say.”

Instead of telling our daughters and sons to “Be good” it is our responsibility to show them how. Actions always speak louder than words. We are at our very best, our most perfect, when we love with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Fathers and mothers teach their daughters and sons to love like they do.
