Broken Merry Go ‘Round
Today’s song talks about addiction and the broken merry go ‘round that so many find themselves on. Like the children of Israel going ‘round and ‘round in the desert for forty years until finally a generation arose willing to put aside their fear and receive the promise.
The chorus goes, “Mama’s hooked on Mary Kay, brother’s hooked on Mary Jane, and daddy’s hooked on Mary two doors down. Mary, Mary, quite contrary, we get bored so we get married. Just like dust we settle in this town, on this broken merry go ‘round.”
A very people-wise writer years ago wrote that most of our problems stem from not loving ourselves enough. If we really knew what marvelous, mysterious, and magical creatures each of us truly are we would never be bored nor hunger for anything outside ourselves to satisfy us. Sixties ballad-singer Gene Pitney sang, “Only love can break a heart, only love can mend it again.”
Isn’t it time we got off the broken merry go ‘round going nowhere, and gave up our addictions that never truly satisfy, but only leave us feeling empty and hungering for more and more. Whether twelve steps, cold turkey, or talk therapy the cure to addiction is always the same in the end – discovering Who and Whose we truly are and finding true satisfaction in that knowledge.
The old preacher commenting on the Winston Cigarette Ad campaign slogan, “Winston Satisfies” questioned, “If that is true, why do they put twenty in a pack?” The plain answer is to keep one coming back to feed that particular addiction.
We are far bigger than our addictions.
