Robert Louis Stevenson wrote in his poem Requiem, “The sailor is home from the sea.” To love a hunter, a soldier, a sailor, or anyone whose work or passion keeps them most often away is a hardship. Fifty-four years ago I began what was called a hardship duty assignment to the then Republic of South Vietnam. I was a soldier and had vowed to support and defend the Constitution of these United States and to obey all lawful orders. On January the tenth nineteen seventy I started counting the days till I could come home. Due to the fact that they were drawing down American forces in Vietnam at the time I got a one month drop off of my tour and so I was home in time for Christmas 1970, sadly for me my first little wife was no Brandy and so she found somebody else in my absence.
I suppose that is what appeals to me most about the young woman in this song is that she is completely devoted to her man. She lives for those moments that they are together waiting always for his return.
This August tenth my wife Linda and I will celebrate our thirty fifth wedding anniversary. My mom said to me when she first met Linda, “Son, that woman is never going to let you go.” I am so glad that my mama was right about that and that even after an almost ten year career working away from home that she did not let go of me. I am a very blessed man.
