Blue Christmas

Had he lived Elvis Presley would have been eighty-nine today. Much has been written about the boy born in Tupelo, Mississippi who grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. Today I sing one of the many songs he made famous. One of Elvis’s long time friends B.B. King in the movie Adventures In Babysitting says to the Baby Sitter played by the lovely young Elisabeth Shue, “If you want to come in here, you’ve got to sing the blues.”

Elvis grew up with in the cross road where rhythm and blues, country western, gospel, and rock ‘n roll music all intersected. He made all four genres his own and his legacy lives on.

I have written several tributes to Elvis over the years. One of my earliest memories is of my parents allowing me to stay up late one Sunday evening to see Elvis sing live on the Ed Sullivan Show. Elvis had been a truck diver and my daddy was one and Elvis was from Memphis and we lived in Chattanooga, so we were quite proud to see a Tennessee boy do good.

Happy Birthday, Elvis!
