Amarillo By Morning

Here is another song made famous by George Strait. A friend of mine lived in Amarillo for a short time with her son, his wife, and their children and fell in love with the area. I have had the good fortune to have been in all fifty states and eleven other countries and can say unreservedly that I found something in each of those places to recommend them.

When George has the rodeo rider sing, “I lost my saddle in Houston, broke my leg in Santa Fe, lost my wife and a girlfriend, somewhere along the way” it adds great context to the cowboy dream of “looking for eight when they pull that gate.” We all desire to inspire others by doing our best at something, I think.

Once on a quick drive up to Baggs, Wyoming from Loveland, Colorado to retrieve a camper trailer that I had had to leave behind in the deep snow when my work assignment changed, I stopped in for supper at the Cowboy Inn, one of the just two restaurants in Baggs. They were beginning Friday Night Karaoke so I signed up and got to sing right away. I picked Amarillo By Morning and sang it with all my heart and was pleased with how it came out. I think I may have even surprised the listeners a bit, but then as the ole saying goes “Practice makes perfect.”

You be the judge of whether this cowboy stayed on for eight or not and whether the performance was surprising, inspiring or just another practice ride.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
