A Duet With My Baby (The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson)
My daughter Emily loved to sing and she sang her song to anyone who came along. Today I share my voice with hers in a song that I always refer to as The Baby Song because it has the line, “I love the way you call me Baby.”
Emily and I never got to sing this song as a duet while she was living. I added my voice to hers on a recording she left me. We did sing together in church when she was little. We sang in front of the church as a family and we would stand Emily on a chair so she could be seen over the podium.
Emily’s mother was a chanteuse and made her living as a young woman singing in lounges. Emily would I think have loved to sing professionally, alas that was not to be, still she shared her voice and her song everywhere she could. You can find a couple of her songs on YouTube by searching YouTube Dancing With Spock. That was the name that she and her sax-man, Toby Harris, picked to sing under. Toby was her Baby and she his. I am so glad they found one another before Emily’s brief performance here ended. Her songs still echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved her and those who have come to know and love her through her songs in the eleven and a half years since she died.
