100 Years

The line in this song “when you’ve only got one hundred years to live” struck a particular note with me when I first heard it. For quite some time it has been one of my goals to live 100 years. I have certain caveats though: I do not want to outlive my mind, my health, or suffer a lot of pain. I would gladly opt to an earlier conclusion of this journey rather than suffer those particular indignities.

Another line in the song that appeals to me is “fifteen for a moment” for I recall thinking as a young boy that fifteen seemed to be the ideal age to be. As it turned out I spoiled and wasted my fifteenth year, grieving over the loss of what I then believed to be the great love of my life. How much our perspective at fifteen can change as the years pass.

I no longer believe the premise of the song that we only have so many years to live. Per adventure perhaps, but I believe we get to live as many different and varied lives as we choose. Whether I make it to one hundred years or not this go round is not important. What matters most is not how long we live, but how well we live, not how much money or power we secure, nor how many possessions we amass nor the number of fans or likes we win.

Today is the first of the “David Sings” songs in alphabetical order, this numbered title being ahead of all the rest. Tomorrow I sing A Duet With My Baby that I refer to as the Baby Song for it has the line “I love how you call me baby. Emily, my baby girl, only got thirty-two years to live this go round while I have already more than doubled that. If this time I only have one hundred years to live, I hope to live them all as she did with a song in my heart.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
