Being Forgetful
Despite the New Testament’s advice about being forward thinking and forgetting the past being forgetful is worrisome for children and adults alike. If we live long enough being forgetful is something that comes to most if not all of us.
My wife’s mom whom I think of as my mom too is eight-seven years young and loves to play Yahtzee. Without exception when she makes two or more Yahtzee’s in a single game and runs up a high score and I call out her winning score she will say, “I have never made that many points before.” But of course she has, she just forgets things like that. We were both marveling yesterday how long past events can seem so clear and crisp while recent events can often seem at best a little hazy.
A big part of the fear of dying for many is the fear of being forgotten. Jesus once said that not a sparrow falls from the sky, but that God takes note, even to the keeping track of every hair on our heads. One of the thieves crucified on a cross next to Jesus said to him, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
Today’s book is full of little cues and clues to help children remember. They work for adults too. As for that fear of dying thing, fear not for you and I will be remembered for we are worth more than many sparrows, hair or not.
