1934 Meet Kit – Chapter 1

Today I begin the last week of the David Read’s Children’s Book series. One last short American Girl book, the first in that series of books, and then three little books will completed the project than I first began four years ago for a little girl named Amelia Curtis and then published on this blog three years ago. I decided to post them again when I found out I was going to be a grandpa. Emma Grace White is four months and five days young today. I hope these two girls will enjoy listening to these stories again and again and read them for themselves someday, to their children, and to their grandchildren.

Some people say that movies are the books of the twentieth century and it remains to be seen what will be the predominant medium of stories in the twenty-first century. Kit’s medium is the newspaper and she becomes an intrepid reporter taking risks to share stories that she believes are important for people to know.

I believe all of the stories I have read to you these last several months are important ones to tell and I honor their writers, illustrators, and publisher for putting them out there. Stories help us discover who we truly are and I am happy to perform my little part in that discovery process.

I recall as a young man listening to one of my brother’s records with George Beverly Shea, famous song leader and soloist for Billy Graham’s crusades. The song that struck me most is called “the love of God is greater far”and the third verse was reportedly found scrawled on a wall inside an inmate’s room in an insane asylum:

At the conclusion of the song on the record George Beverly Shea says “Out there beyond the horizon, there’s more, there’s more.” that is who you are, who we are, we are infinite and eternal, wholly god and wholly man. When we discover our true identity life is never the same again.

Enjoy the story, this adventure in time and space, and to paraphrase Jesus words to Peter afterwards, “When you discover who you really are go and comfort your brothers and sisters.”
