1854 Meet Kirsten, Kirsten Learns A Lesson
Today concludes the reading of the first of three American Girl books that I chose to be a part of my David Reads Children’s Book Project. We say farewell to Kirsten in 1854 and tomorrow meet Samantha in 1904. I tried over the course of two hundred and ninety six readings to whet a young person’s appetite for reading.
I was a very poor reader to start out in school, but it was watching my mother devour romance novels that my brother and I would borrow for her from the Bookmobile that visited our school weekly that made me sure that there was something in books worth investigating. I am forever grateful to my mom for introducing me to the worlds that await in books.
I hope over the course of sharing these readings again that someone else has had their curiosity pricked enough to pick up a book and discover a new world for themselves. Writers, I believe, are tour guides sharing the worlds that they have ventured into in their minds. The most wonderful thing is that with a little practice we can all learn to do this even without a guide book or tour guide. We are explorers in time and space. That is, my friends, the reason we decided to make this journey in the first place. Like the bear in the children’s song went over the mountain to see what he could see.
Bon voyage, pilgrims.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
