A Wrinkle In Time – Chapter 11

Last night I rewatched a classic holiday movie from 1947 – Miracle On 34th Street. In the movie a smart business woman does not want her young daughter raised to believe in Santa Claus because she does not want her disappointed as she has been by her first husband who left her when their child was a baby. The little girl played by Natalie Woods and her mom become test cases for the real Kris Kringle who is fighting the commercialization of Christmas.

Even Santa loses heart a bit and fails a psych exam on purpose when he thinks he has failed to win over the two resulting in his having a court hearing to determine his sanity and to prove his true identity.

The subject of our true identity is one that I have spent a great deal of time thinking, speaking, and writing about. In one of Kris Kringle first conversation with the little girl he talks about the importance of imagination in our lives and how it opens up our minds to worlds of possibilities. Some would condemn imagination as merely wishful thinking like telling Santa what you want for Christmas.

There is a Bible verse that says “Ask whatsoever you will believing you shall receive.” In one of the more disappointed and skeptical times of my life I lost my vision, my imagination, and my faith in the miraculous. I thought myself becoming more adult like the Apostle Paul putting away childish things. But later I came to realize that discarding beliefs that no longer serve us does not mean that we need to throw the baby out with the wash. Sometimes we need to remember that Jesus reminded some skeptical folks in his day, “You must become as little children to enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

Whether you believe in Santa Claus or the Baby Jesus, if you believe enough in yourself to discover your true identity you will find the greatest love and the greatest miracle of all inside of you.
