A Wrinkle In Time – Chapter 10

Today is called Black Friday because of the huge volume of retail sales on the day that used to known as be the first shopping day of the Christmas season for it put many merchants who had even poor sales during the rest of the year “in the black.” Even though many people shop for Christmas gifts now all year round the idea of a big discounted sale prices still lure many into the mad dash for bargains on Black Friday.

Amazon and other online retailers have been offering Black Friday deals for weeks now. The twelve days of Christmas have nothing on the sales marketing plan of many retailers. Since I was a boy and much farther back than that many have complained about Christmas becoming too commercialized. This is a ridiculous premise since the whole ideas of celebrating birthdays is commercial at its core.

“What would you like for your birthday?” Why the most expensive stuff available of course. Even the wise guys knew as did the little drummer boy who who all brought the baby Jesus the best most costly gifts they could afford.

The Hallmark greeting cards slogan says it, “When you care enough to give the very best.” The true meaning of Christmas the religious people say has been lost in all the commerce, but has it really? Isn’t the real meaning of Christmas that love costs everything.

In my family finances were limited so the children got the most gifts and the older folks “drew names” and there was a rule that ten dollars was the upper limit on gifts. Fifty years ago ten bucks had a bit more buying power, still those who could afford to always fudged that ten buck limit. It is so hard to put a price tag on love. But then the merchants say “Humbug, have we got a deal for you.”

Happy Black Friday, everybody.
