She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain
Another classic children’s song from my boyhood today. I don’t recall as a boy singing the red pajamas or sleep with grandma verses when I was a a boy, but we only sang one or two verses of most songs then, even the national anthem. And that is a good thing because some of the middle verses they say are problematic for their sympathetic words regarding the institution of slavery.
It is hard for some of us to understand how so many could have believed slavery was ever considered okay. The attitude of entitlement still persists today. The few, the rich, the powerful, the beautiful people still think they are better, brighter, more deserving than others. It is an old but persistent myth this entitled thinking that some few or even one has the right to decide for others.
Some civilizations deserve to be “gone with the wind” and some beliefs to be discarded when we discover that they are no longer serving us.
Today’s song is about anticipating the arrival of someone very special. I believe every baby born needs to be wanted, looked forward to, celebrated, and anticipating. Sadly that is too often not the case. I am reminded of the of a scene in one of my favorite movies “Gifted” where a young very gifted little girl is raised by her uncle after her mother took her own life when the little girl was just a baby because she refused to continue to live a slave to her mother’s dreams and designs for her. No one should get to be the gate keeper of our dreams.
The little girl learns of her mother’s death and that her father never wanted her and she is heart broken. Her uncle takes her to a hospital waiting room and they wait and wait with a roomful of people till a man in a surgical gown comes out and says, “It’s a girl” and the room comes alive with joyous celebration. The little girl is caught up in all of the excitement. Her uncle looks down at her and says, “It was just like this the day you were born.” The little girl, still beaming with delight, says, “Can we do it again.” And so they stay and wait for the next baby to arrive.
Anticipation…
