Itsy Bitsy Spider & Yankee Doodle Dandy
Two more children’s songs for you to consider today. The Itsy Bitsy Spider is not deterred by even a torrent of rain coming down the water spout nor should we be by the floods of opposition that come our way. We should rather see opposition as a challenge to our will and determination. We should say as I heard a young woman say to an overly critical professor, aloud and to all would be critics, “You are not the gate keeper of my dreams.”
The second song is of a lighter nature but has a similar message “Yankee Doodle keep it up.” Adults may see a double meaning in that line especially as the song refers to Yankee Doodle as a dandy and with the girls quite handy. Creatively energy is often tied to the sex drive and thank heaven it is, else we would not have survived as a species on this planet for as long as we have.
But creative energy and the sex drive are for more than just making babies. They are also for making a better and more beautiful world for those babies and us to not just survive in, but to be truly and gloriously alive in. The creative urge and the urge to merge are both intended to put a real feather in our hats, call it matrimony or macaroni it does put the fun in functional and dysfunctional. All good relationships are always a bit of both.
We ever have within us the desire to do great good and great wrong. We are a mixed bag and it is not always clear whether we will turn out to be the hero or the villain of our own story but we, I believe, are the gate keepers of our dreams, and no one else.
Sweet dreams, then children, young and old.
