Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 21
Today Wilbur says a tearful good-bye to his dear friend Charlotte. Having spent all her strength weaving the Humble web for him, producing her egg sack, and laying five hundred and fourteen eggs Charlotte has no strength to climb down for the return to the farm. Wilbur has the idea of taking her egg sack back to the farm so that her children when they hatch in the spring can begin their lives where their mother lived most of hers.
Wilbur convinces Templeton to retrieve the egg sack for him after solemnly promising him that henceforth he will not touch his slop till Templeton has eaten his fill first. The offer is too great for Templeton to refuse.
Thanks to Charlotte, Wilbur will live past Christmas and see all the sights and sounds of winter and the enfolding of a new spring and see Charlotte’s children but, that is a story for tomorrow.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
