Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 18
In today’s chapter Charlotte weaves her last word for Wilbur and creates a masterpiece for herself. Little Fern, Henry, and Templeton have the best time of their lives. Tomorrow is the judging and Charlotte predicts that Wilbur will win a prize and in the early morning light says she will show him her surprise.
It is a fitting word that Templeton picks out of a newspaper that had been used to wrap a lunch for Charlotte to weave into her last web. The word is humble and Wilbur is above all things that. And soon all the county fair goers will know and Zuckerman who is already proud of his pig will be even more so and decide to ensure that Wilbur has a long and pleasant life on his farm.
The scene with Mrs. Arable seeing how happy her daughter Fern is on the top of the Ferris wheel her friend Henry reminds me of a scene in Hearts In Atlantis where young Bobby and his girlfriend share a first kiss by which all others will be judged.
Today’s chapter is entitled “The Cool of the Evening.” It is a time when miracles abide. It is a time we are told that God once walked and talked with the first pair of young lovers, Adam and Eve. Ah, young love always makes a good story and love keeps us forever young.
