Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 15

Today’s chapter begins with the crickets singing that summer is gone and soon it will be winter. For many, autumn is a time of mourning and dread of winter’s approach. The HBO series The Game Of Thrones catch phrase “Winter Is Coming” is to them a harbinger of a fearful future. Winter to them is like death, the end of the line, or as the Book of Hebrews puts it: “It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgement.”

What a terrible outlook on life, a real buzz kill that is. Life is not only spring and summer folks but autumn and winter too. Get used to it. Look forward to it. Get the most out of it. I no longer believe the “Is that there is?” way of looking at life, three score and ten and that’s all she wrote. I am already almost three years in to extra innings and I have come to see even death as more of a time out, a reset as it were for future games.

Unlike Shirley McClain and others I have no clear memories of past lives, but like most of us if we are honest with ourselves, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is not my first rodeo nor my last. Winter is indeed coming so what is a fellow or a lady to do? I say let’s keep dancing and for those so inclined to self-medicate do that and for those who have figured out how to just get high on life do that.

Above all things as Charlotte advises Wilbur, “Never hurry and never worry.
