Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 14

The vested interest behind the profit motive has long had me wary of most professional people – doctors, lawyers, politicians, preachers and salesmen especially, but today’s chapter tells the story of a country doctor that genuinely cares about his patients. I am sure that there are good people in all professions that sincerely provide a service to their patients, clients, constituents, etc. All are not only out to make a buck, but most want to make a positive difference and want to go home each night thinking that they have done something worthwhile with their day and earned their pay.

A worried mother, Mrs. Arable, takes to heart their family doctor’s advice regarding her eight year old daughter Fern. He is both wise and caring and tells her not to worry about Fern. “Children pay attention” he tells the mother and that if animals really do talk that children listen carefully enough to hear them.

A friend asked me recently if I remember my first love. Of course I do. My mom was far and away my first love, but there was a girl, there always was a girl. I remember a little girl named Peggy in the third grade that opened up my little heart to the possibility that someone besides my mother could love me and that I could love them back.

My lovely and loving wife, Linda Lee Stokes, was not my first love nor my last, but she has long had the strongest sway in my heart. A new little girl, Emma Grace White, my granddaughter, has recently captured my imagination and affection. There was a girl…

Do you remember your first love?

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
