Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 9

Today’s chapter shows us the tenderness between Wilbur and Charlotte as Fern sits and listens to their conversation. Wilbur’s boast that he too could spin a web if he tried is the main theme of today. After two very hard tries and equally hard leaps and landings Wilbur realizes that he was just “showing off.”

Wilbur begins to think about what the old sheep said and again is fearful for his life. Charlotte reassures him that she is still working on a plan to keep him alive. He asks if there is anything he can do to help and Charlotte says that she wants him to build himself up, chew his food, eat it all, remembering to leave a few scraps for Templeton, the rat. But the advice Charlotte emphases most is that Wilbur should never hurry or worry.

That is good advice to each and all of us. We make most of our mistakes and encounter most of our accidents and injuries when we hurry. And worry it is like war. Like the nineteen sixties song says, “War, good God y’all, what is it good for? – Absolutely nothing!” That is doubly-true of worry. Nothing good comes from worry but only undue stress, strain, misery, and pain. Worry shortens our life and robs it of the peace and joy that make life worth living.

Remember, “Never hurry and never worry.”
