Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 8
My favorite line in today’s chapter is Mr. Arable saying to his wife trying to comfort her fears regarding their daughter Fern’s mental health after she tells them at the breakfast table about the talking animals in Her uncle, Mr.Zuckerman’s barn cellar. Mr. Arable says, Maybe Fern listens more closely than we do.
I believe that our lack of attention and ever increasingly shorter attention spans rob us of as Shakespeare put it, “worlds not dreamt of.” Someone has suggested that the reason baby’s do not talk right away is that they still remember secrets from the realm from whence they come that they are not supposed to share. I believe there are precious secret surprises behind those knowing smiles. These secrets we are only privy to if we sit quietly and listen with open hearts, minds, arms, hands, mouths, noses, eyes, and ears to all the Universe has has for us, for all the Universe to flow in and through us.

Next time you are walking in the woods and think you are totally alone try a little experiment. Stop walking and stand or sit quietly for a while. You will find that soon the forest will come alive with the eager voices of all the forest dwellers. I am convinced that if we listened long and hard enough that we would begin to understand what they are trying to tell us. Yes, Shakespeare caught a glimpse of it when he had one of his characters say to another, “O Horatio, there are worlds not dreamt of in your philosophy.”
Like our second father Adam we want to name everything as if one word or even a few is all there is to know about anyone or anything. What we see, hear, touch and taste is all but a reflection of ourselves. Look and listen close and say with me another line from my daily mantra: “I mirror you, I admire you, I worship you.” Three great religions if not all of them profess: :The Lord God is One!” Great Oneness exists and we, everyone are ever in its midst. If we listened carefully and long enough all envy, enmity, and war would cease. For as the cartoon strip Pogo put it some years ago: We have discovered the enemy and it is us.” Or as I like to phrase it, there is no enemy, no other, only one, and it is us.
