The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 13

Today we learn what great liberties the screen writers took with Frank L. Baum’s original story. But it is a natural thing for stories to evolve over time. This is especially so if they are not written down and the original writings faithfully referred to and consistently interpreted. Even then misunderstandings and myths can often take the story in directions the original author might never have intended.

I believe this is especially so of books and stories considered to be holy or sacred. Why, a document as short and simple as the U.S. Constitution though revered by many has been twisted to justify a myriad of positions its original writers most assuredly never intended and the body of laws created by the Legislative Branch it set up to write, the Judicial Branch it set up to interpret, and the Executive Branch established to enforce are continually in flux.

Of the several types of government, and probably most everyone believes that theirs like their religion is the best one, a constitutional republic is what we in the west deem the best. The checks and balances of the American Political Experiment have thus far weathered the greed, fallibility, and thirst for power of those who have lead the three branches of our government for over two centuries now. Even so we are always only one generation away from losing it all, indeed more than a few believe we already have and like Scrooge at first thought of Christmas that it is all Humbug.

We found out today that the Great, the Terrible, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz was himself an admitted humbug, hypocrite, faker, con-man. I believe that even in the worst of us, the least of us, there is also our highest and best self just waiting for an opportunity to shine.

I heard someone say recently, “I don’t like to think of anyone as hopeless or a lost cause.” Neither do I, nor does the Universe, but waits patiently to move heaven and earth on our behalf to rewrite our stories into better and happier ones.
