The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 12
The Winged Monkeys fly Dorothy and her group to the Emerald City only after they become terribly lost after wandering for days on their own trying to get there. First she blows the whistle that the Queen of the Mice gave her.
It is the Queen that suggests that Dorothy use the magic of the golden cap she is wearing to summon the Winged Monkeys and use up one of her three requests by asking them to fly the the four of them and Toto too to see the Wizard of Oz again.
If all you know is the movie version of the story this is one of the many chapters that is left out. The movie actually deals with less than half of the twenty three chapters of the book. And there are as yesterday’s picture depicts five other volumes of Oz stories that were published by Frank L. Baum.
When I read and recorded these wonderful books some years ago, I thought of J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories of Middle Earth and C.S. Lewis’s Narnia stories. I only hope that my granddaughter Emma Grace of Texas, her four years senior Amelia of Wisconsin and all readers and travelers young and old will like Dorothy of Kansas venture to the wonderful land of Oz, to Middle Earth, to Narnia and to many other imaginary countries to help prepare us all to appreciate the wonders of this world and beyond.
