The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 3
Dorothy’s meeting of the first of her three traveling companions reminds me of the old joke about the farmer being outstanding in his field. Chapter 3 is entitled Dorothy Rescues The Scarecrow. Indeed Dorothy rescues all three of her friends along the yellow brick and in the end they return the favor. Friends don’t keep track of who rescues whom the most or last, love just always shows up when it is supposed to.
Recently I heard a special technique for those who have a hard time apologizing even to their friends, their loved ones. The trick is don’t apologize just ask them for a favor so you can put yourself in their debt. This is way more meaningful to both than an apology. I think it just dawned on me what the book and the movie Love Story means by the line, “Love means you never have to say you’re sorry.” Friends owe their lives to one another and as the Bible says, “Love covers a multitude of sins.” We all miss the mark, make missteps, and say silly and stupid things especially in the heat of the moment. But friends do not keep a list of wrongs and usually cut all apologies short with, “Forget about it.”
Keep you friends close and if you get the chance befriend an enemy, remembering that friends are only strangers we got to know. Isn’t that right, Scarecrow?
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
