The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 2
In Chapter 2, Dorothy awakes in the wonderful part of Oz populated by Munchkins. In the movie this is the first scene in Technicolor as the opening scenes in Kansas and in the farm house with Dorothy and Toto being whirled away in a tornado are all shot in black and white. The effect is an explosion of color and the classic line from Dorothy to Toto, “We’re not in Kansas anymore.”
I have been in Kansas, all fifty states, and eleven other nations. I almost typed “foreign” but caught myself. It is an egocentric conceit this thinking that all things outside our familiar circle are foreign or inferior. We are better served to remember with the writer that “all things are ours.”
Like Dorothy we need to open our eyes to the beauty around us be that Kansas or somewhere we have never been before. Beautiful as Munchkin Land is, this is only the first stop along the yellow brick road for Dorothy and Toto. After meeting Glenda the Good Witch and getting the dead Wicked Witch of The East’s magic slippers (silver in the book but ruby red in the movie) before her equally wicked sister, The Wicked Witch of the West, can get her hands on them, Dorothy and Toto are off to see the wizard for Glenda tells them that he alone can help them to get home to Kansas.
Next stop, not the Twilight Zone, but a cornfield reminiscent of Kansas where Dorothy meets a traveling companion that will inspire later in the story the classic line, “Scarecrow, I will miss you most of all.”
