Hands Are Not For Hitting
One of the lines in my daily recited mantra goes:
“Whatsoever my hands find to do this day I shall do with my whole heart finding purpose in even the most menial tasks.”
Hands are not for hitting, but can find many ways to make life better for ourselves and others. Our oldest living President Jimmy Carter after his one-term Presidency encouraged many people to work with their hands to help others by supporting and working in the Habitat for Humanity program, building affordable housing.
When we were younger and more agile my lovely wife and I participated in a couple of their projects in Houston, Texas. It was a good feeling occupying our hands in the service of others.
Like most husbands I have heard myself complaining long and loudly about some home repair or improvement project added to my “Honey-Do” list. But I confess few things offer as much satisfaction as completing one of the especially long and more difficult projects.
Plumbing is one of my least favorite projects, but recently I replaced the shower handles and drain spout in our master bath. It was one of those home repair projects that it felt so good to check off the list and to know I can still be a Handy Man.
