Old Turtle
When my son Jay, who is thirty-three, a husband, and now a father, was a small boy he had a turtle that he named Jolly. I thought of Jolly as I read today’s children’s book. A few years before my son was born I had a falling-out with God and for almost twenty years, except for a few brief “relapses” I tried my damnedest to pretend there was no God. But the Hound of Heaven found me again, the God who is “all in all”, the many faced God whom I lovingly refer to as the Universe or my loving and infinite source.
The debate goes on regarding who God is, whether God is, and many are trying to sell their particular angle on God. A very wise old turtle as I imagine Jolly would be today said it so well, “God is all those things and more and we are God’s gift to the world, but we have forgotten Who and Whose we are.” Remember, oh remember, awake oh sleeper, for a new day is coming.
