The Egyptian Polar Bear

We are often amazed to learn that people long ago were more aware of the wide world than we imagined. I am reminded of one of my dad’s favorite grabbers, “When I was seventeen I was astounded at how little my dad knew and at twenty-one amazed at how much he had learned in three years.”

The credit for most of what we know today belongs to the pioneers, explorers, and scientists of the past. The famous quote goes something like, “If we can see farther it is because we have stood on the shoulders of giants.” I still can recall how much further as a boy that I could see sitting on my daddy’s shoulders.

It has been twenty-six years since my dad took his final bow on this stage. In three months I will be the age that my daddy was when he died. I wonder how many acts are left in my play. Time enough for my new granddaughter to see the world from her grandpa’s shoulders I hope.

It has been a long time since I took my daughter and later her brother to the zoo to see the bears -black, brown, and white. I think Emma Grace would like to see a Texas Polar Bear at the Houston Zoo.
