A Big Fat Enormous Lie

Whether big fat and enormous or just a little white lie we all lie and most of us get quite expert at it especially lying to ourselves. Why is it always so easy to see when others are lying and often so difficult to see our own self deceptions?

Here is a clue if you are willing to accept it. Ego or Satan, the father of lies, has his/her origins in our own heart and mind. Jesus once said, “Out of the heart are the issues of life.” There is only one God, the father of lights from whence every good and truth thing comes down to us. From where then comes the lie?

In the creation story in Genesis after creating all there is, including man and woman, God planted a garden and placed the pair there. That little rhyme reminds me of a joke, “It was not the apple on the tree, but the pair on the ground that caused all the trouble.” God we are told looked down on creation and pronounced it all good. Just where did that serpent come from then to lie to the couple convincing them to doubt God and disobey that one little skinny tiny rule about not eating from one tree in the center of the garden. We are told that we, mankind, were created in God’s image. The opposite seems more often to be the truth. Yet we are co-creators with God. We create just as God did by thinking things into existence.

The pair on the ground created the serpent, the false god, to have a choice. Before he came along they had no choice. They knew only good, only God, only truth. The literal meaning of the word Satan is “accuser of the brethren.” The lying and the finger-pointing began in the garden. When God asked Adam why he had disobeying the one rule, Adam pointed to Eve and said, “The woman you gave me told me to.” And when questioned Eve said, “The serpent tempted me.” The serpent was cursed to crawl on his belly, the women to have painful childbirth, and the man to have a hard row to hoe providing food for himself and his family.

The serpent may have whispered a loud the first lie, but it was the couple who had brought him into existence in order to have a choice between the false god Ego and the one true God. As the little boy in today’s book learns, the only way to get rid of a big fat enormous lie is to own up to it. Why is that so hard? In a word – Ego. Don’t listen to that big fat enormous liar.
