The Lorax

Dr. Seuss’s 1971 classic, The Lorax, teaches children the importance of protecting the environment. It is our poor stewardship of this planet that has caused global warming and deniers of this man-made problem are becoming fewer and fewer while its effects are becoming more and more evident to all.

Some scientists fear our efforts to change behaviors that have caused the problem are too little and too late. We shall see as shall or children and grandchildren. The tobacco industry’s products have shortened the lives of millions and the oil industry, automobile industry, and other industries who have for years burned fossil fuels have contributed to the destruction of the environment and made-made global warming. We the people collectively and individually have as well.

Will our wind turbines, solar panels, and electric cars be enough to turn the tide? We hope so. The world has just endured the hottest month on record. And the first ever tropical storm warnings have been issued for Southern California. Tomorrow the Weather Channel predicts a high of 105 degrees for Houston, Texas. I do not recall it ever being that hot here.

When I think of all the millions of gallons of Texas Crude oil that have been burned and the other millions turned into the plastic bags with which we have littered the planet, I recall a Texas Public Service Announcement, “Don’t You Mess With Texas.” Maybe we proud Texans should widen our worldview and everyone else as well. Little Lorax has a point to make about protecting the environment.
