Milly And The Macy’s Parade

Today’s children’s book reminds me of the movie Miracle On 34th Street. Both are about a little girl and Macy’s Thanksgivings Day Parade in New York City. As a boy Thanksgiving was a very special holiday for it marked the official beginning of the Christmas season. My home town like most towns and cities had its own smaller version of the Macy’s Parade that ending with Santa arriving in a sleigh and the lighting of the downtown Christmas lights.

Thanksgiving morning was always filled with the delicious smells of preparation of the Thanksgiving feast and the Christmas Parades on TV hosted by Captain Kangaroo on CBS. The leaves were always off the trees by Thanksgiving in our town and the weather was cold already.

I have lived most of my adult life in Houston, Texas where the lowest average temperature is 66 degrees and that usually occurs in early January. It does dip a little lower sometimes and we even get a little trace of ice or snow though those incidents are even more rare. For the last ten or so years of my working life I worked up north and got to experience real winter weather and I loved it. It reminded me of Christmases as a boy in Chattanooga.

Most of my friends and family do not care for cold weather and like summer weather best though these 103 degree days we have been experiencing in Houston lately have even them complaining about the heat and looking forward to cooler weather.

Some years ago I was working in Delta, Colorado which is on the western slope of the Rockies and my wife Linda drove up for a visit in late November. We went to watch the town’s small Thanksgiving parade and to see them turn on the Christmas lights. We failed to dress heavily enough for the minus twenty something weather that night and did not make it for the Christmas lighting ceremony, but headed back early to the motel I was staying at to watch it on TV while thawing out. It was one of our many adventures together.
