Marta! Big & Small

I met my granddaughter, Emma Grace White, for the first time yesterday. In anticipation of that visit I wrote the first of many poems that I intend to write for her. The poem is entitled New Kid On The Block and with the poem I posted a picture of her Dad, Jonathan David James Wallace White, sitting on my shoulder posing with his sister Emily and her best friend Cindy wearing their matching New Kids On The Block tee-shirts right before I took them to see the boy band in-concert at the Astrodome in Houston Texas almost thirty four years ago. I also attached a week old picture of Emma with the poem. Here is a copy of the text:

New Kid On The Block

Emma Grace White is one week old today.

She arrived almost a whole month early.

In all her pictures she is wearing a hat.

Is her hair dark, light, straight or curly?

She sleeps a lot her daddy tells me.

He was the New Kid some years ago.

The secrets behind those sleepy eyes

We would all of us so like to know.

Emma Grace is one week old today

And it comes as no great shock

She has already quite a fan base

This New Kid On The Block.

A Chip Off The Ole Block

Marta! Big & Small is a wonderful little book and with today’s recording I have made sure that Emma will be able to hear her Grandpa White reading that book to her someday. The little girl I originally read it for, Amelia Curtis, is now four years old. And my Wisconsin friend Deb, her Gama, tells me the Amelia refers to Emma Grace as her Texas Baby.

I just texted the above picture to Amelia’s mom, Alicia, so she can see me holding her Texas Baby for the first time. Many things are bigger in Texas and I feel my heart growing bigger because of this Itty Bitty Baby named Emma Grace.

Your friend, fellow traveler, and Emma’s grandpa,

David White
