If I were a lamb…

Today’s children’s book is short and to the point, imagining what it might be like to be a lamb. For sometime I have entertained the notion that instead of the “One life ‘twill soon be passed and only what we’ve done for Christ will last” that I was taught from a little boy, that we more likely get to live as many lives as we want and they of our own choosing.

Today is the thirty-fourth anniversary of the day I married the the lovely and loving Linda Lee Stokes. My parents drove out from Chattanooga, Tennessee, my home town and theirs, to see me a couple of months before that fateful day. I drove them, my nine year old daughter Emily and Linda my girlfriend at the time from Houston to San Antonio for the day where we saw the Alamo, all the sites, and ate Tex-Mex at a restaurant along the River Walk.

While we were walking through the garden at the Alamo my mom took me aside and said, “Son, you know that woman is never going to let you go.” For a long time I thought that was meant as a warning. My mom was always quite protective of me. But I have come to see it as my mom expressing her relief that I had finally found a “keeper” a woman who would love me like she did – for keeps.

(In the Alamo garden thirty-four years ago.)

If I get to choose, and I believe do, in my next life I intend to find Linda sooner and love her longer. I honestly don’t know how much longer we have this go round. I have a feeling that despite my mother’s words Linda will let go of me for a short R & R in that place in-better adventures in time and space. I just might have to fend for myself for a few years till my own departure time comes.

I think it will be like the final scene of one of my favorite movies, What Dreams May Come, Linda and I. Thank you, my Darling, for all our time together, for all the dreams we have shared and the dreams yet to come.
