Snow Wonder We’re Friends!

The only thing better than Christmas in July would be snow in summer especially after the hottest July in recorded history. Some scientists worry that all this heat coupled with the melting ice and snow of the Arctic and Greenland might shut down the currents in the Atlantic Ocean triggering an Ice Age. The movie The Day After Tomorrow postulates that it happened ten thousand years ago after worldwide volcanic activity warmed the planet and that it could happen again, this time due to man-made global warming.

Well, that is a little more snow and a lot more winter than even this southern boy who must have been a Yankee in another life has in mind.

The old adage says, “Be careful what you ask for.” All I’m saying is what kids start praying for after the newness of the new school year wears off – a snow day away from school – a cool, crisp, and playful day with friends is always nice.

One of my best boyhood memories from my youth in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where we could always count on at least a few snow days each winter, is of a snow day sledding with friends on a snow-closed street with a steep incline. It was freezing cold, but we kept warm trudging up the hill pulling the sledge so we could glide down it again and again till it was almost dark and time to go home for supper.

This little book reminds me of that day and how much I love you all, my friends, and snow.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
