Our Shared Story
Today’s reading is one of those rare finds as it is the a First People’s tale through the eyes of a boy. I believe that true education is achieved in the words of a seventies rock anthem, when before we accuse, criticize, and abuse – walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Or in Thomas Blue Eagle’s case, take a ride on his painted pony.
Children are fascinating by ponies and horses. In my hometown we had a local cowboy named Bob Brandy. He had a children’s TV show Mondays through Fridays on the Chattanooga ABC station and all the kids wanted to be on that show. He had a pretty German wife named Ingrid and a magnificent Palomino horse named Rebel. The three were at grocery store openings and children’s events throughout the area. And once I stood in a long line for the opportunity to sit for just a moment on Rebel’s back. My legs were too short to reach the stirrups.
As stirring as that boyhood memory was for me as I read The Ledgerbook of Thomas Blue Eagle I felt the wind in my hair as I rode like the wind on a painted pony. In our stories we share the essence of Who and Whose we are and celebrate our Oneness.
