The Disney or Hollywood Version

The roots of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice story go way back to ancient Egyptians and Greeks, then to a fourteen stanza piece written by the German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1797. The more widely known version of the story comes from Disney’s 1940 animated film called Fantasia.

The Disney or Hollywood Version of stories often change the ending, plot, or even the central theme or moral of the story. Disney’s beloved first cartoon character Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice learns that trying to use magic to short cut good old fashioned hard work seldom turns out as planned.

One of the lines in my daily mantra goes: “Whatsoever my hands find to do this day, I shall do with my whole heart finding purpose in even the most menial and repetitive of tasks.” The Karate Kid’s master, Mister Miyagi, teaches his young student, Daniel, to master his hands, body, and spirit with good old fashioned hard work – “Wax on, wax off.”
