Trying To Make Sense Out Of Things

Most if not all religions, myths, and legends come from the very human urge of trying to make sense out of things. Today’s One-Minute Bedtime Story is a case in point. Trying to make sense out of things can create some interesting and elaborate stories, still asking questions and listening can often lead us to a simpler and more plausible explanation.

True scientists readily admit that the more we find answers for the more we find there is even more to question. Years ago I worked with a man who was my age and like me he was a Vietnam veteran. We both had qualified for training in another stateside government job. As we were going to the cafeteria to have our lunch at this government run facility I noticed that my co-worker washed his hands before using the urinal in the restroom and not afterwards as is the more common practice. I asked him about it later and he said that he was more concerned with keeping a particular part of his anatomy clean that he was his hands so he always washed his hand first and not afterwards. His take on personal hygiene though different made perfect sense.

When we are negotiating this time and space jungle it is good when we are trying to make sense of things that we are not too quick to judge others who have found different ways to make sense of things. I have found the expression, “It is my opinion, but I could be wrong” is a heathy way to stay open when other’s beliefs and actions are different from our own. Asking Why five times and listening carefully, we just might learn a few thing from cooler cats.
