The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Today’s story is a cautionary tale warning pranksters and con men regarding the pitfalls of playing fast and loose with the truth. Most people are willing to overlook and forgive even the weatherman for getting it wrong occasionally, but once you become known as a habitual truth-bender people just quit listening to you.

Adolf Hitler postulated in his pre-coming to power book Mein Kampf that the bigger lie you tell the more people will believe it. Yesterday I quoted one of our higher angels and best Presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Who early in life garnered the nick name Honest Abe. Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”

The truth will out, they say, meaning those who make a habit of lying will be found out. Senator Joseph McCarthy lied so many times about having proof in his hand about how many Communists there were in our government that it became a running joke that he could not keep the number straight. McCarthy had a young lawyer whispering advice in his ear Roy Cohn. Later in life Roy Cohn mentored another boy in the art of the deal, Donald John Trump.

Mister Trump has gone through a lot of lawyers and has been heard to say more than once and more often of late when seeking out new legal representation, “Where is my Roy Kohn?”

When I was a boy I learned another quote that explains why many lawyers, salesman, preachers l, politicians and others often fall from grace and have such a bad name. It goes like this, “You cannot do wrong and get by, no matter how hard you may try.”
