Rumplestiltskin

Beginning today and for the next couple of weeks my blog will be featuring readings from Shari Lewis’s book One-Minute Bedtime Stories. as a boy on Saturday mornings I watched Shari Lewis and her hand puppets, the most famous of which was Lamb Chop, entertaining and teaching through stories and songs.

Today’s story and a whole book of one-minute bedtime stories came out of Miss Lewis’s desire to help busy parents spend precious minutes with their children in the family ritual known as the bed time story. A story need not be long to satisfy the need to both tell and to hear a good story.

The story of a father exaggerating about his daughter’s special talent and a deal struck in desperation by her with a strange little man to save her life told in one minute is the first story. My high school principal Mister Hobart Millsaps went to great lengths to secure interesting, entertaining, and encouraging speakers for our high school chapel assemblies. I heard him say once regarding long winded speakers that anyone who could not saying what they wanted to say in fifteen or twenty minutes had just not really thought it through.

Miss Lewis proves that point with her condensed version of these many times told tales. One-Minute Bedtime Stories is one of the best children’s books to give to expectant parents and grandparents and will really come in handy when that precious little one finds their voice and says, “One more story, please.”
