The Going To Bed Book
I recall as a small boy not wanting to go to bed but to stay up and watch TV like my parents did. I would lay cross-ways in the living room chair and stare at our small table-top black and white TV that we had bought in Detroit, Michigan. We lived there a couple of years in the early nineties fifties and had watched the nation-wide programs like Howdy Doody and a local TV show that later went nation-wide called Soupy Sales. When we moved back to Chattanooga, Tennessee we had to wait a couple of years before we even had a local station to watch. And when we did it was shared by two networks CBS and NBC. Later we got another station and some years later a third one, an ABC affiliate.
I can still picture that little boy fighting off sleep, so afraid he might miss something. Mom or Dad would say, “Son, time to go to bed. Your eyes are closed.” I would answer back, “I’m not tired, I’m just resting my eyes.” Then dad would pick me up and carry me to my bed where I woke up the next morning, rested and ready to watch the test pattern till the new broadcast day began. That little black and white TV was my window on the world.
After all these years I still enjoy dozing in front of my grown much wider, more colorful, and so much bigger window on the world. To quote my friend Tim’s adult version of my reply to my parents remark about watching TV with my eyes closed. “I am not sleeping, just checking my eye lids for pin holes.”
