Guess Who, Pooh!

Lovable ole Pooh Bear though not the brightest bulb on the tree might not win at Charades or Trivial Pursuit, still he knows his friends and is quite expert at Guess Who. Friends know you, they recognize your voice and can tell when what you need most, more than any advice or council, is their undivided attention, a caring heart, and a listening ear.

I really enjoyed reading today’s children’s book about Winnie the Pooh and his friends. I consider it an important primer for little ones in the importance of making and keeping friends. Simple-minded Pooh has learned one of the most important lessons of all about being a friend and having friends namely that your “best friend” should always be the one you are with.

In one of my favorite more grown up books, Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein, the main character Michael Smith, the man from Mars, has many strange and unusual gifts, among them, as testified by several women is that he is a great kisser. When asked separately by their boss what makes Michael such a great kisser, all three of his lovely secretaries agree that when Mike kisses you it is like he had no where else to be, nothing else to do, and there is no one else in the world but you. That kind of focus is what makes a great kisser, a great lover, and a great friend. Jesus’ disciple John referred to himself as “the disciple that Jesus loved.” Jesus had that kind of loving focus whether it was with a woman at a well, a rich man, a poor man, a beggar man, or a thief. It is said that Jesus knows all our secrets. The song says, “There is not a friend like Jesus.” I bet he was a great kisser too.
