Peter Rabbit, Where’s Peter?
One of the most beloved creatures in children’s literature is Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. Today’s story is but one of the many she wrote about him and his exploits.
I am sure that the farmer whose garden Peter and his buds continually raids has a quite different view of Peter than the millions of children who find him endearing and delightful.
I have a dear friend in Wisconsin who has for years been at war with a squirrel that digs up her flowers. She is away this weekend visiting her beloved granddaughter Amelia in Appleton. It is likely that she will when she return to her home in Mineral Point find that the squirrel has launched another counter offensive in their continuing battle over who that soil and whatever grows in it really belongs to.
Peter Rabbit does not recognize the farmer’s property rights anymore than does my friend Deb’s squirrel. When she reads this she will not like that I referred to him as “Deb’s squirrel.” She sees him as her cross to bear as the farmer does Peter. I am pretty sure Amelia might see things a bit differently.
Jesus once took a small child and placed that child in front of a group of hard-headed and hard-hearted adults that he was attempting to talk to and said, “Unless you become as this little child you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” That child lives in all of us as Jesus said in another place that the kingdom of heaven does. Another Bible quote comes to mind “And a little child shall lead them.” To which I can only add, that little child is probably following another even smaller critter like a kitty, puppy, or perhaps a bunny or even a squirrel.
God bless the beasts and the children.
